Dutch Minister Calls for Stronger Youth Care in Caribbean Netherlands

Dutch Minister Mirjam Sterk, responsible for Long-Term Care, Youth, and Sports, has called for intensified efforts in prevention, care, social support, and youth services across the Caribbean Netherlands, which includes Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba. In a letter published today, Sterk acknowledged that meaningful progress has been made in recent years but stressed that significant work remains to bring youth care in the Caribbean Netherlands up to equivalent standards with the European Netherlands. The call reflects a longstanding concern that residents of the Dutch Caribbean islands receive a lower quality of social services compared to their counterparts in the Netherlands proper. Achieving equivalence in youth care is seen as a matter of basic rights and equal treatment for citizens under the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
