Curaçao Detention Center Launches 'Back to School' Free Barbershop Project

The Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon Kòrsou (SDKK), Curaçao's main detention and corrections facility, is launching a community barbershop project called 'Back to School' from August 17 to 19, 2026. The initiative allows inmates who have completed a barbershop training course to demonstrate their newly acquired skills to the public. The project is designed as a way for the facility to give back to the community while providing detainees with a practical platform to showcase their work. Free or reduced-cost haircuts are expected to be offered as part of the event ahead of the new school year. The program reflects broader rehabilitation efforts at SDKK aimed at equipping detainees with vocational skills that can support reintegration into society after release. Vocational training programs within correctional facilities are widely regarded as effective tools in reducing recidivism.
