Golden Rock Residents Become First-Time Homeowners After Years of Effort

The Government of Sint Eustatius (Statia) has reached a significant milestone by transferring home ownership to the first group of Golden Rock residents, ending years of efforts to formalize housing rights in the community. Acting Island Governor Sharon Hassell signed the official documents on behalf of the government, while Commissioner Reuben Merkman was present to congratulate the new homeowners. The Golden Rock neighborhood has long been home to residents who lived there without formal ownership of their properties, leaving them in a legally uncertain position. This transfer marks the culmination of a sustained governmental push to regularize land and housing titles for longtime community members. Becoming official homeowners gives residents greater financial security, access to credit, and long-term stability. The milestone is seen as a meaningful step toward addressing housing equity on the island. Further groups of Golden Rock residents are expected to go through the homeownership process in the future.
