WWII Munitions Explode During Belgium Wildfires, Blaze Now Contained

Wildfires burning in Belgium over recent days triggered the explosion of old munitions left over from World War II. Emergency services responded to the incidents but were not placed in danger during the detonations. The fires have since been brought under control, according to local authorities. Belgium, like many parts of Western Europe, still has unexploded ordnance buried across its landscape from both World Wars, making wildfires in certain areas particularly hazardous. The combination of dry conditions fueling the fires and the presence of buried munitions posed a complex challenge for first responders. No injuries among emergency personnel were reported as a result of the explosions. The situation is now considered stabilized.
