About this Event

Jouvert Morning (from French 'jour ouvert' — daybreak) is a pre-dawn tradition rooted in Caribbean Carnival's earliest days, when enslaved and freed people took to the streets in the safety of darkness. On Sint Maarten it opens the Carnival finale stretch — historically the Saturday of the week before Grand Parade — with revellers walking from Simpson Bay into Philipsburg from around 4 AM, covered in paint, mud, chocolate and powder, following live bands and mobile sound rigs.

What to Expect

Come prepared to get very messy. Paint bombs, cocoa powder and coloured chalk are the norm — wear old clothes you plan to throw away, closed shoes (there's broken glass), and a phone bag if you insist on bringing one. Music is soca and calypso at high volume. The walk itself is roughly 3-4 miles from Simpson Bay into Philipsburg, ending around sunrise at the Carnival Village with breakfast and rest.

Bring cash for water and food, waterproof phone case, sunglasses (paint splashes), and a change of clothes at the destination. Rideshares are hard to catch pre-dawn — arrange transport in advance or plan to walk both ways. Not stroller-friendly and not recommended for children under 12.
