About this Event

The Grand Carnival Parade is Sint Maarten's headline event — the largest, most-photographed and highest-attended parade of the entire Carnival season, running through Philipsburg. SCDF's actual 2024-2026 schedules all placed Grand Parade on April 30 (Tuesday in 2024, Wednesday in 2025, Thursday in 2026), so the durable anchor is the calendar date April 30 within Labour Day week — Labour Day itself is May 1, a public holiday on both the Dutch (SXM) and French (Saint-Martin) sides. SCDF (St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation) has organized the parade in its current form since the 1970s, and unlike the pre-dawn Jouvert on Friday, this is the daytime spectacle: troupes from every neighbourhood on the island plus guest bands from Anguilla, St. Barts and Guadeloupe.

What to Expect

A full-day event that starts around 10 AM and runs into the early evening. Expect 30-50 troupes in elaborate costumes, roadmarch trucks with towering sound systems, brass and steel bands, and dancing school contingents. The route hugs downtown Philipsburg from Front Street through to the Great Salt Pond area. Vendors line the route from mid-morning selling johnny cakes, ribs, saltfish, and cold Presidente/Carib. The finale is a competitive judging segment at Carnival Village.

Best free viewing: along Front Street between Wathey Square and the Old Street junction — dense but tightly packed and shaded on the north side after noon. Arrive by 9:30 AM to claim a curbside spot. Boardwalk/waterfront viewing is more spacious but sun-exposed all day. Carnival Village has a paid grandstand for the final judging segment; tickets sold at the door. Wear sunscreen, closed shoes, and pack water — mid-day heat plus dense crowds add up.
