St. Maarten's Third Reading Festival Opens Its Doors Today

Each year on September 23, the world observes the International Day of Sign Languages, a date established by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness about the vital role sign languages play in ensuring the full realization of human rights for deaf individuals. The observance has been marked annually since 2018. The day highlights the importance of linguistic inclusion and accessibility for deaf communities around the globe. Sign languages are recognized as complete, natural languages that are distinct from spoken languages in each country or region. The commemoration serves as a platform to advocate for greater access to education, employment, and public life for deaf people. St. Maarten, like many Caribbean islands, is home to a deaf community whose members rely on sign language as their primary means of communication.

St. Maarten's 'Man UP, Check UP' prostate cancer awareness campaign achieved its highest participation in the event's history, with 518 men receiving free PSA screening tests. The campaign was organized by Positive Foundation and Elektralyets Foundation, two local health advocacy organizations. PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, testing is a key early detection tool for prostate cancer, which disproportionately affects men of African and Caribbean descent. The record turnout signals growing health awareness among men in St. Maarten, a demographic that has historically been reluctant to seek preventive medical care. Both organizations are celebrating the milestone as a major step forward in community health outreach on the island.

Volunteers, students, community organizations, and businesses joined forces across both sides of the island — Sint Maarten and Saint-Martin — for the 2026 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). The collaborative effort resulted in the removal of more than 1,554 kilograms of waste from beaches, coastlines, waterways, and surrounding areas. The ICC is an annual global initiative that mobilizes communities to address marine debris and environmental pollution at the local level. St. Maarten's participation reflects growing civic engagement around environmental stewardship on the dual-nation island. The cleanup's cross-border nature, involving both the Dutch and French sides, underscores the shared responsibility both communities feel toward protecting their coastline. The volume of waste collected highlights the ongoing challenge of waste management and ocean pollution facing Caribbean islands. Events like these also carry indirect benefits for tourism, as clean beaches and healthy coastal ecosystems are central to the island's appeal.
