GEBE has until July 27 to defend fuel surcharge hike before regulator

The matter was discussed during a meeting between BTP Head Judianne Labega-Hoeve, Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications (TEATT) Grisha Heyliger-Marten, TEATT Chief of Staff Otmar Jonis, and Legal Counsel to the Minister Joeri Essed. The BTP, which serves as St. Maarten's utility regulator, is tasked with ensuring that rate adjustments by GEBE are properly substantiated and compliant with regulatory standards. The fuel clause is a variable surcharge added to consumers' electricity bills to reflect fluctuations in fuel costs, meaning any increase directly impacts households and businesses across the island. If GEBE fails to provide adequate justification by the deadline, the BTP could potentially order a rollback or suspension of the increase. The review reflects growing government scrutiny over utility pricing at a time when cost-of-living pressures remain a concern for St. Maarten residents.
