Russia charges Telegram founder Durov with facilitating terrorism

Russia has launched a criminal prosecution against Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, accusing him of facilitating terrorist activities through his messaging platform. Durov, who is also a vocal critic of the Russian government, is currently living abroad and is not in Russian custody. The charges represent a significant escalation in Russia's long-running conflict with Telegram, which has previously resisted demands from Russian authorities to hand over user data. Telegram is one of the world's most widely used encrypted messaging apps, with hundreds of millions of users globally, making the case internationally significant. Russian authorities have historically targeted tech platforms and their leaders who refuse to comply with state surveillance requests. The prosecution raises fresh concerns about the Kremlin's efforts to control digital communications and suppress dissent. This case adds to broader international scrutiny of Durov, who was also briefly detained in France in 2024 on related allegations.
